Armillary instruments, gnomons and sundials serve different purposes: positions, seasonal shadows and solar time. Similar-looking rings or scales need not represent the same coordinate. Identify the quantity measured, fixed axis, moving parts and scale units before examining ornament, manufacture or institutional use; appearance alone is insufficient to establish function.

The museum describes armillary structures including fixed and moving ring systems, an axis and sighting tube, with mansion names on a ring. They embody equatorial and ecliptic concepts mechanically. A gnomon instead uses a vertical element and shadow scale, illustrating technical diversity rather than one generic divinatory compass.

Observe noon shadow length at one site across seasons and record date, gnomon height, level surface and noon convention. An armillary exercise identifies the axis direction separately from its moving sighting device. These observable operations explain how data are produced more clearly than a general claim about ancient wisdom.
Context and limits
Instruments have calibration, installation, wear and reading limits; display replicas differ from original performance. Artistic and scientific value can coexist without making personal forecasts reliable. Do not move collection objects without permission. Establish coordinates and measurement first, then investigate political or religious uses through their own evidence rather than inferred mechanical authority.
