Definition and terminology

I Ching can refer to the Zhouyi base text or more broadly to its commentaries and later interpretations. The base text includes hexagram names and statements; commentaries discuss structure and meaning. First check how an edition separates these layers. Divination is an important background, while philosophical and historical reading ask additional questions.

Structure and rules

Practice the two line types, count six positions upward, identify lower and upper trigrams, and use an index. Learn labels such as Initial Nine and Six in the Second, then basic judgment vocabulary. Compare translations with the text. Casting requires an additional procedure, moving-line record and interpretation rule beyond structural recognition.

Worked reading

An introductory lesson can compare Qian’s six yang lines with Kun’s six yin lines, read the whole-sign statements and consult heaven/earth imagery in Shuogua. Students may discuss initiative and receptivity as a modern application. Such reading does not require inventing a casting date or a personal destiny narrative.

Context and limits

Authorship and dating need qualification, and later sequence diagrams, Najia methods and Plum Blossom divination are distinct developments. Record titles, chapters, editions and interpretive sources so disagreements can be compared fairly. Reflective usefulness and accurate factual prediction are different claims; the former does not automatically supply evidence for the latter.
