Definition and identification
The zodiac follows the ecliptic, the apparent annual path of the Sun. Astrology divides it into twelve named intervals from Aries to Pisces. Their names evoke star patterns, but their boundaries do not follow those patterns. A Sun sign is one longitude assignment, while the Moon and other bodies have their own positions.
Structure and reading rules
A tropical zodiac starts at the vernal equinox; thirty degrees begins Taurus and sixty begins Gemini. Sidereal systems adopt a stellar reference and specify an offset. Traditional element and modality classifications form a three-by-four symbolic arrangement. These classifications belong to interpretive rules, rather than measurements of physical fire, earth, air or water.
Concrete example
For a tropical longitude of seventy-five degrees, subtract Gemini’s starting longitude of sixty to obtain fifteen degrees Gemini. A longitude of three hundred and five becomes five degrees Aquarius. This is an interval calculation without a personal prediction. A different reference origin can change the sign label, so chart comparisons must begin with coordinates.
Historical context and limits
IAU constellations are unequal bounded sky regions, and the ecliptic also crosses Ophiuchus. That fact does not automatically redefine a twelve-part symbolic zodiac. Ptolemy documents an ancient seasonal framework. Personality language attached to signs can be studied historically or reflectively, but a sign name alone does not establish character or future events.
