Definition and details
Separate numeral shapes, positional calculation and symbolic enumeration: writing a number, operating on place values and assigning ritual meaning are different tasks. Decimal computation does not imply that a single digit determines personality. Indian mathematical history is likewise not proof of modern commercial numerology merely because both involve numbers.
Structure and history
St Andrews distinguishes numeral forms from the development of positional notation. Debate over the Bakhshālī manuscript also shows why bark dates, writing dates and textual formation need not coincide. State the evidentiary layers and controversy instead of presenting one radiocarbon announcement as an uncontested date for the first zero or an entire algorithm.
A concrete example
Compare 205 with 25: preserving the middle place gives the first number a different value. This demonstrates notation rather than fortune. Almanac lunar-day numbers illustrate another use, labelling intervals of solar–lunar separation. Symbolic counts in beads or scripture require their own community-specific sources and cannot be derived from positional arithmetic.
Context and limits
Do not universalize number meanings across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka or South Asia. Preserve language, religious and historical differences. A modern birthday digit-sum practice needs an identified rule and source and belongs to symbolic interpretation. Correct execution of arithmetic does not establish reliable judgments about a person’s ability, morality or future.
