Definition and scope
Physiognomic history asks who interpreted appearance, who circulated those interpretations and how they were used. Older materials can address faces, hands, voice, skeletal form and demeanor. Study endorsement, criticism and social setting together. Long survival demonstrates cultural significance rather than dependable predictions about individuals.
Structure and details
Sources include arguments, formulas, diagrams, biographical stories and catalogues. A story can narrate a prediction after its subject’s outcome is known. Attribution, composition and edition history are separate questions. Unverified lineages should remain identified as traditional narratives rather than receiving precise timelines unsupported by evidence.
Example and history
Xunzi names physiognomic figures while rejecting fortune judgments from form and complexion, showing an early debate. A later encyclopedia collects numerous manual traditions, revealing classification and transmission. These are different kinds of evidence: philosophical dispute and compilation history, neither automatically a verified report of a successful prediction.
Contexts and limits
Examine links with office, gender, lineage and wealth, including the ranking of bodily differences. Similar metaphors across cultures do not establish direct borrowing without transmission evidence. Commercial services and online imagery have distinct modern histories. State period, source type and uncertainty to explain influence without perpetuating appearance-based judgments.
