Definition and details
Dream divination asks whether a dream signifies an event and who interprets it, within broader dream culture. Political explanation, literary metaphor and reflection on thought are distinct uses. Identify subject, interpreter and genre before the dream details, rather than projecting today’s symbol tables into every early account as fixed universal answers.
Structure and history
The Zhouli office and six-dream classification offer ritual evidence; Zhuangzi’s butterfly episode questions identity and waking; Hanshu’s miscellaneous bibliography documents organization of omen literature. Ritual, philosophy and bibliography are different genres, not one author’s system. Later notes also require their own chronology instead of assigning their date to every layer.
A concrete example
Commentary links thought dreams with waking thoughts and distinguishes joyful and fearful experiences, showing attention to ordinary emotion. Compare the classification criteria with the butterfly narrative: one sorts states or origins, while the other questions reality. This is a historical observation, not a modern sleep experiment or a diagnosis of the dreamer.
Context and limits
Identify an actual witness for a Duke of Zhou dream book or webpage; title prestige does not date every entry. Omen successes can be arranged retrospectively, and absent failures prevent accuracy calculation. Study hope, fear and political uses without medical or financial advice, preserving chapter, commentary layer and uncertain attribution so the evidence’s reach remains clear.
