Definition and details
A common reading form combines terse statements with longer explanations about stems, branches, strength, function and configuration. Aphorisms are not assumption-free natural laws, and notes may expand or reshape their meaning. Identify headings and short base passages first, separating commentators’ examples rather than treating the page as one author’s single act of composition.
Structure and history
The work is traditionally associated with names including Jing Tu and Liu Ji, while Ren Tieqiao and other later interpreters shaped reception. Such names are useful attribution evidence, not sufficient proof of a precise early date. Check the underlying witness and commentator, distinguishing original title-page information from a modern editor’s description.
A concrete example
The headings on heavenly patterns, human affairs and stems provide a concrete textual exercise. Choose a Jia Wood passage, identify phase, season and relational terms, then examine which conditions the note supplies. This studies argument structure without assigning personality from a day stem; traditional chart examples are not controlled experimental evidence.
Context and limits
Compare related works without forcing their useful-factor, pattern or seasonal vocabularies into one definition. A term can change scope between base text, old note and modern manual. Concision and prestigious attribution do not prove forecast accuracy; historical medical, financial or gendered judgments should not become present-day assessments of an individual.
References & further reading
Historical sources document ideas and rules of their time, not empirical proof of predictive accuracy. Source notes identify the nature and scope of each reference.
